HOW STUDENTS SPEND THEIR TIME

In their recently released book, Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses, professors Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa take a serious look at the college experience of 21st century students. By using the survey capabilities of both the Collegiate Learning Assessment and the National Survey of Student Engagement Arum and Roksa conclude that students spend a total 16 percent of time in academic pursuits; in week’s span only 30 hours at most are dedicated to academics.

This site’s purpose is to find how this statistic applies to the University of Mary Washington. The average student spends his or her time widely on an average day. In an effort to discover how UMW student’s spend the other 84 percent of their time this report looked into four distinct areas. The findings include a look at student volunteering with national organizations, on campus jobs, student interaction with the alcohol policy, as well as participation in club-sports.
